smo here! i'm an animator out of new york, been working here since the start of 2006. i just stumbled on the forum while looking for info about a bulk scanner i got that can handle 12f paper; what a resource! i love bluth's work and actually some notes of his really helped me get a handle on charting when i first started working that way. always interested in what he's got to say so i thought i'd join up!
i've worked on a lot of flashy flat projects and a few fun traditional ones, depends on what i can find for work, but am always trying to get better at traditional animation, and this forum looks great for insight. if you're interested you can check out my reel here: http://www.smomotion.com/reel/ i got discouraged for a bit first breaking into animation in new york and seeing how the market was. i always had dreamed of working my way up that animation ladder, inbetweener to assistant to lead, learning as you go. but i guess i never got the memo that it wasn't the 1940's anymore! it's a bit tough to cut your teeth on character animation when everything's either totally symbol based in flash or done overseas, but i've met some awesome people and we keep each other inspired and inject good stuff in where we can. i'm starting to push myself a bit more and try and take on some projects that give me more freedom to practice drawn animation too. i'll have to check things out here, i really love learning about animation and technique and am always excited about new pockets of knowledge! sorry for the rambly intro! |

Welcome to the forum Thomas.
I really enjoyed your take on discovering the potential of pencil and paper in your blog. You make me think I should invest in those high techy things! I really like your reel (the sequences with Pink Panther of course my favorites). You've got some other very innovative things in there as well. Love the walk down the staircase. Rather surreal and very inventive. Keep on animating! |

thanks guys! and no worries arif i'm not anti flash animation per se...i'm just very pro traditional animation and it's what i strive to get better at.
glad you liked my paper bit rodney! i tried to establish a certain "voice" on my blog but i don't really think that way so it takes a bit for me to keep it up, but i've been looking into pencils too a lot, i'll probably dip in here and see what everyone uses. i got really pencil crazy after first hearing about the blackwings and realized how different materials really make a difference too. the ingram paper makes such a big difference over normal computer paper it blew my mind! |
