    camera angel

    Hello Dave..
I think..camera angel should take more important roll when you are shooting Mr.Don bluth Drawings……I can remember that (in the video..Mr.Don drawing Daphne)camera was in the right side(screen)..and I missed some important moment when Don was drawing ……we don't want to miss any moment when he draws.. I saw only his hand…and it covers the drawing at the early stage….

    Regards,

    Arif

    Arif,
I can't speak for Dave (He is our camera angel... bet he's never been called that before!) but I think Don drawing Daphne was one of the earlier videos that was recorded. Since then I think he's really got that camera angle down.

Additional note to Dave: You were right on the money with regard to my ISP problems. They apparently cleared everything up while I was gone and I can watch all the videos now. Life is good. Thanks!

    Arif,
I went back and viewed the video and definitely see your point.
It should be noted that this particular video appears to be a video sketch more than a full fledged drawing tutorial. This is evidenced by the ending of the video where he signs the art 'to John'.

I did think I'd come back and comment further as I feel there is something more here to explore.

A Lesson I get from Don drawing Daphne is about going with the flow (to use Don's own term). Notice the utter confidence and arcing gesture of his hand as Don lays down the structure of the character's form?

This isn't about learning how to draw Daphne, it's about studying Don! Don't just watch the pencil lines. Watch his hand. Anticipate where he is going. Where he goes where we wouldn't expect him to... we'll find ourselves learning.

Rodney is correct... This video was shot in 2000 at the request of a good friend. I was still pretty new at shooting video and only realized my errors after the tapes were finished. I think we got it pretty well covered now. We now shoot the videos from above Don's left shoulder as well as over his head so you will not miss anything between the two camera angles.

When Don begins to draw it's like watching a pro play 3-card Monty! It's hard to anticipate where his hand is going to finish a line so occasionally you may see a sudden zoom out on the shot as I try to adjust to the speed of his hand on the drawing. It really is quite entertaining to watch Don draw.

Hand drawn animation is so unique and personal. This surely must be traditional animation's blessing as well as its curse.

There are a lot of talented animators out there yet there is only one Don Bluth. And as good as we might get there will never be another Don Bluth.

If only we could be a fly on a wall in Don's studio.

Ah... wait, thanks to the videos we can! Now thats what I'm talking about. Wowee! Yahoo!
