Hi guys!
I was just wondering what every one thought about the new PIXAR film, Brave? In all honesty it does look really good but its strange how there going with the whole Princess theme!
What do you guys think?
all you need is a little imagination.
Hand draw animation isn't dead if you practise it.
Well, Aidan, here are some thoughts:
First and foremost, no one has seen Brave, so lets just wait and see and have fun while we're at it! I am not too eager about its anticipation because it is a CGI film; but if it were Disney's next 2D flick, I would be counting down the days!
Also, I have no problem with the Princess genre. As long as the stories and characters are distinct, Disney (or Pixar, in this case) is not necessarily doing same ol' same 'ol'. In fact, my favorite film of Walt Disney's time was Sleeping Beauty, and Walt Disney had stated that in order to not reproduce Snow White and Cinderella, he gave the film unique stylization. And it is trully the most artful animated film of the Disney cannon.
What's up with the title change to "Brave?" I read on the TAG blog that it was supposed to be "The Bow and the Bear." That does not have the word "princess" in it, so why change it? I was actually disheartened when Disney changed the name Rapunzel (which happens to be my favorite fairy tale) to Tangled to attract wider audiences.
And, if I may digress a bit, I read multiple versions of Rapunzel growing up, and it is a darker fairy tale that ultimately has a happy ending. Although I enjoyed Tangled, I was disappointed by how the film removed the fairy tale's most dramatic elements. I like drama in animation, and that's perhaps what draws me to a lot of Bluth's work.
But about Brave, I am certain I will like the film if I can connect with the female characters, and if there are high emotional stakes that pull the story forward. Wishing for another 2D film, though, but that's for another thread!
Like the Kaymartha12 side above me, No one has seen the movie so it's hard to really judge it. I do however have an opinion on the characterized. Something about it, more over the main character, is off. She doesn't look ugly or unattractive but just not right.
The story looks like your average Princess kicks butt story.
I must say, I am impressed with the animation I've seen in the commercials. I do want to see this one for several reasons. 1. It looks like a change from the clich? "Furry friends and cutesy princess" stuff. One thing I like is a film with a strong female lead. I like to see the perspectives of someone else, not just the big manly man that all males relate to (That is why NIMH is my favorite. I don't like seeing a personification of myself on screen all of the time. I like to see characters that force me to think differently to understand the story, along with some that I can relate to) 2. I haven't(Besides Secret of Kells) seen a film that actually casts a Gael as the good guy. (I'm Irish) and thus far every film I've seen Celts in has cast them as ferocious barbarians without reason. So this is unique in many ways. A strong, Celtic, female lead. A welcome change from the Damsel in distress that Disney has fallen back on since their first film, "Snow White" 3. The animation doesn't look like the cookie cutter CGI that they've been pumping out this last decade. It looks like somebody actually sat down and thought about it. I've seen some of the things CG studios have tried to do (Like turning 2D characters 3D) and certain character models belong in certain mediums, otherwise they just seem awkward. Sorry for the book... I write and animate, so I tend to pick apart both art and story.
What's "up" with this new naming convention?
Fun = Toy Story
Scary = Monsters Inc.
Lost = Finding Nemo
Small = A Bug's Life
Delicious = Ratatouille
Fast = Cars
Incredible = The Incredibles
Up
Brave
Tangled
Enchanted
