Ok, Thanks for the "gimmie" in reply to my note - though it takes some of the wind out of my sails ;) That being the cat and mice not having a prominent dark or black outline like everything else.

Before I get into the "negatives" I'd like to mention some of the things I like.
Your color theme giving the room a cozy warm feeling. The detail of the nicknacks around the room. The "practical" lighting throwing enough shadows to give a definite night-time feel.
The detail in the ironwork holding the cauldron.
The glass jar with the horse.

Now some of the other things.

With the woodwork on the ceiling pointing to such a definite perspective it shows up the relatively weak construction of the shelves and the fireplace. I may be wrong about the the construction of the fireplace (you may have meant it to be not "square") and it may simply be the way the lighting interacts with it

With the sparkles around the wizards upraised finger, and the complexity of his face, I'd prefer a much simpler background immediately behind him. This loss of silhouette goes for the area of his hand holding the book in front of the detail of the owl. Making the near wing of the owl almost be lost in a dark shadow may help.
A contact shadow for the armadillo might be in order.

Part of the cauldron handle is positioned so it look like a unicorn instead of a horse - or is it the other way around. Maybe blur that out a bit more.

What is the item next to the glass jar? It's is not a problem in itself - I just can't figure it out.
In general I would like to see a more care and constancy to the lighting and shadows.

Here is a quick rehash mainly showing the shading to the fireplace, the darkened wing, and simplified BG behind the hand. I lost the sparkle FX though

Hey JT,

Thanks for the Crit and funny you caught everything I've caught. Ya the cat and mice were an after thaught and were actually drawn about 5 years earlyer for a different piece. when the picture was printed the publisher actually had the whole piece darkened and you couldn't see the difference. As for the horse in the jar I was aware the handle that hangs the pot to the lanyard makes the horse look like a unicorn and I have had many a people say "Lovely unicorn" hehe . (my Fault....didn't catch that one till to late) The rest of everything you had mentioned I got lazy and the customer had sent me notification that they loved the work and not to change a thing hahah so I didn't and took the money and ran.... Thanks again JT for the Critique! I love it when someone else lets me see my work through there eyes. a lot of times after working on a project one gets blind and just looks forward to the end .....

Wow, that's a nice crit! Some of the stuff about the lighting and the close up work didn't stand out to me until it was pointed out. The overall big thing that stood out to me was the background conflicting with the character. Rather than supporting the character, it was a nice background all by itself. I agree if you clean up the silhouette on the wizard vs the bg and focus the lighting to create more of a stage, I think it will be more affective. Small nitpicks for really nice work. Congrats man, looks good!

I like the warmth of this piece, it reminds me of a place to which my mind wandered often during my childhood days, where escapism was the rule and reality was the exception. If I end up an old bachelor, this is what my home will look like...earthy and hearthy. Great work.

Hi there, cartuneman,
I am particularly attracted to your sense of color; the warmed of the piece is wonderful. There is something else worth mentioning. You have included in your work a focal point - although there is much to study and enjoy. My eye goes first to the face of the wizard, and then explores outward from there. It's very enjoyable. Good work.

Don Bluth

Hi ...dmgctrl, Jeremy Hopkins, Greg, Brandon and Mr Bluth!

I wanted to drop in and say thanks for the comments and crits!

dmgctrl Thank you I'm glad you liked the illustration.

Jeremy Hopkins Thanks for the Crit Jeremy, Ya the BG is very busy but It was my intention to make it so and ya The silhouette was an Idea I had looked at. Hummmm? wish I could find the disc I had with tons of lighting changes but the client was awed at the BG and told me to quit messing with it they loved it so as you see it was never confronted again. But thanks for the crit as always I enjoy seeing through other eyes. I may miss something I am blind too. Funny the glitter around the finger was at first just a glow but again the client wanted sparkles so I gave them sparkles..... (I didn't like the sparkels........oh and there was an actual scene outside the window but they asked for it to be removed. funny how things turn out.

Ya Greg you and I go back a ways huh haha nice being here and thanks for the welcome!

Brandon Thank You so very much. When I drew this I had a place in mind and it does exist. it is in Pendleton, Indiana under a giant 100 year old sycamore tree. An old sculptor artist Friend of mine built his home under the root structure of this tree. It was as if entering Winnie the Pooh's home! It's still there but abandon sad to say. the county and state made him move because they said it was an unsafe environment. I still believe that the wizard and fairies and elves of the wooded glen took up residence there. I'll see if I can get some pictures of it and post them to you.

Mr. Bluth It is an Honor to have you view my work and give me such a gracious comment, thank you sir and thank you for keeping my children entertained (as they grew up) through your wonderful work!

hi,

Hey there Moneyguns, ya at first I had his feet resting on a skull and then thought ..."Na" over done so I researched this armadillo and so it was done haha just like the horse in the jar. at first it was a fairy then it was an elephant and then it it was a dragon.......almost made me crazy with making a decision. Then my wife said if I could have anything in a jar it would be a pet horse. Thanks for liking it.

Thank you WillW it was fun to draw.

As for my promise in putting animation here. I thought I'd share a clip from an animation piece I did back in 97 sorry for the poor quality. All the cells where drawn here in the U.S. and colored in Indonesia.

There is lots of good magical details in that drawing. It reminds me of the types of picture book illustrations I liked when I was little because I'd look at the stuff like cauldrons and potions...and I'd imagine I was a witch. I liked thinking I could do magic.

lavallelee
04-27-2009, 05:16 AM
anyone can do magic! it comes out of the pencil

cartuneman
04-27-2009, 04:37 PM
Hahahahaha that's right lavallelee
as artist, it seems like everytime we pick up a pencil, magic seems to just flow from it haha. Oh and I did post a link to some of my animation a time or two over on AF but man it's been ages since I've been over there as well. I've just been to busy with life, man, sorry about that.

Regan I graciously thank you Regan for the nice comment. Glad you liked it.

WillWhahaha ya isn't 97 like almost Pre historic? gosh time fly's too ...man those were the days. glad you liked that clip...if I can find another I'll post it as well.

I just wanted to post some doodles of a fun lil owl I just doodled up and to let everyone know I will have to abstain from the garage competition. (Due to other obligations I must). Wish I could get involved. But hey I'm constantly sketching and wanted to at least doodle up an owl and get you guys opinion.

Good Luck to everyone!

06-26-2009, 10:55 AM
Hi guys,

I'm doing well Mr. Welsh. You?

feliceworkshop, The story behind that drawing is I was doodling one night before dinner and it was created and lay in a pile of sketches for ages. Then I had a phone call from my agent to do a pre-drawing concept for a book she was pitching and so it got colored and then it went no where and it's just lying in my art morgue waiting to see the light of day again someday. Sad isn't it hehe

Mithmeoi, Thanks for liking him so what do you mean by smooth? Just curious?

Well here he is with all his gear.......if anyone wants to watch this poster grow, drop by my blog every now and again. I'll be posting updates there.

Hey cartuneman,

I'm doing well. I checked out your blog posting. I really like the creatures in the Wizard drawings. For the people, I think the guy facing us, should have his head slightly tilted. It might look a little better. Great stuff.

Hey Owen!

Thanks for dropping by and checking out the ole blog.......ya this lil thing has grown to a life of it's own....Great suggestion but I've also drawn the wizard in different positions with the farmer and can't make up my mind yet as to which one to use.....I've already decided that the young apprentice should be in an action pose such as being yanked off his rider by not one but two of the farmers daughters. hehehehehe
