View Full Version : Seth's Toons
Alright, lets see if I can do this with out messing it up. Will start with this for now. http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/Shere.jpg
Lets try another. This is one I did on break at work. I had a ball-point pen and office highlighter markers. I was trying to go for a Retro color look. I think it's kind of awful overall. Oh yeah, not to ramble on, but the characters are from "Talespin" for those who don't know.

Good. :)
TaleSpin fan, aren't you?
Yeah, you got me. :) That show got me into animation. Your from France, right? That's pretty cool. Always wanted to visit there. Hey, Wasn't "Talespin" called something like "Looping" in France?

Seth,
I like your drawing. Really great lines.
Seth,
I like your drawing. Really great lines.
Hey, thanks. My lines have always been really terrible, but just from watching some of Bluth's videos I realized that my pencil strokes on detailing were too weak. Funny I learned something in 5 minutes here that my Art School never taught me.
Here's another one. I was really stressed this day, so I tried to draw her as cartoony as possible. Yeah, I do draw other stuff than Talespin......

Yeah, that's right "Super Baloo." I came in possession of a Talespin pin from France that said "Super Baloo" on it. I guess that's why. I'm jealous of you guys, ;) seems like you got way better Talespin merchandise than the United States did.
Here's some more. Nothing to be impressed by, they were both copied from pictures obviously. "Monkey See, Monkey Do", Eh?

Nice work. You work so clean.
This was my first character I ever created. Back when I was younger I use to make really lame Mario Bros. comics with some friends. And I mean LAME. Anyways, we decided we needed a new villian for the comic so I came up with "Bowlinda" Bowser's sister. She's an oldie but I still keep her around. This is my most recent Turn Around Sheet for her head. http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/Lindasheets.jpg
This picture deserved more attention, but I was kind of lazy with it.
I can almost hear her saying: OH! Really?
http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/really.jpg
By the way, people often don't get her name. It was an unoriginal mixture of the name Bowser and Belinda.
Alrighty, last picture of this character. This is more fierce than I like to draw, and I went a little overboard on it. All though It was really fun to draw. (Don't mind the drool, she just really wants to get a pizza!)
http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/Bowfire.jpg
Oh yeah, I forgot to say earlier....if anybody has any helpful criticism I'm all ears. I know these drawing have to be filled to the brim with mistakes. Thanks guys!

Nice.
Well, talking about coloring, I know we all here are working on animation, so if something is in color it has to be as realistic as possible, but what about coloring without any shadow(s) for the moment (I'm pretty bad in coloring, too :p)?
You know sometimes when I see a great colored drawing (or a great colored comic), I think “wow, that's amazing, the cartoonist is damn good”, but see, what about Hergé and Tintin and Snowy?
If we look at his work, well, we can see that there has never been any shadow in it (excepted when it was obligatory (mm… is “compulsory” better? Never mind)), and that's really not a problem when we read the comics. Actually, It's so well mastered that we even don't notice this particularity.
So, you could try to color something, you know. :)
I had some Art Lessons on inking drawings with a pen and brush. I never quite realized how hard it is to control a paint brush until now but anyways.... this is a picture of one of my own characters named "Sophie".
She's a character who I still haven't nailed a solid model sheet for.

Hey that's good. :)
Maybe there's just a little problem with her right leg/foot. It's just like if she was not really standing on them, see what I mean? …Er… I can't feel the foothold, is that right?
Well, hope I made myself clear enough.:o
Keep drawing!

Yeah, your probably right. It's hard for me to notice my own mistakes. I drew this picture so many times I was really tired of it, I kept ruining it.....mostly from splashing my ink everywhere.

Another picture of my Character "Sophie"
When I was coloring this I was thinking to myself, why haven't I colored anything in almost a year? Than I saw the results and remembered why.
I could sit here and pick out a million reasons why I hate this drawing, but I guess I should just be quite and look on the bright side.
I tried to think about what was going on in this picture before I drew. I imagined that she was saying the phrase: "Where have you been, Do you know what time it is?"
I don't know if I captured that feeling or not, so please let me know.
Thanks.

With apologies to Seth... (I got your message)
Sorry if I built this up in a way that would make you think this was going to be anything of interest. In hindsight... this seems rather silly. ;)
But in my defense...
She's a great character and I just was curious about how the color would stick to her.
I'm not sure how embarrassed I should be.
I'm sure I guessed wrong on all the coloring.
I promise to make it up to you later okay! :)

Don't worry, Rodney. I'm very impressed, you got the color scheme all most perfect. Here's an old picture of her from a few years ago, so don't hold the lameness against me! ;)
http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/queenbowlinda.jpg
By the way, thank you for the great character comment. You know when I first came up with her a lot of people said she was a bad character. I got pretty discouraged and was just going to pitch her design, but I'm glad I didn't. :) Thanks Rodney.

Whew. Maybe there is hope for me yet!
I was going more by a feeling of her personality than anything and I'm a little shocked that I came that close. Interestingly, I was going to color the horns an tanish yellow but at the last minute decided to go with the grey instead.
when I first came up with her a lot of people said she was a bad character.
What? Maybe by 'bad' they meant 'really good' or sinister? ;)
There is no accounting for taste is there?
I can't speak for others but... I like her.
Just like Don has his Rag Bag to look back at from time to time and maybe even dust off and use again... keep a good sampling of those old characters. You never know when you might need them.
This is my latest picture of my prized and favorite character, Belinda Meabon. She's a Wee Lil' Lassie from ye Highlands of Scotland. She's lived a sheltered life of shepherding, and now that she's out on her own in the Big Apple, she is quite amazed by simple things. Her favorite part of America is the abundance of junk food. Is that an Ice Cream truck I hear?
In the story I'm working on she befriends Sophie (the lion cop for those paying attention
:D)

Very nice. :)
Have you created a model sheet for her?
No, not exactly. I tried a turnaround sheet about a year ago and it didn't come out so hot. I probably should be more adventurous with drawing. After all it is just a white sheet of paper, but amazingly it has the power to intimidate me.
This is an old picture I did of Rebecca. I thought I had lost it when my computer crashed, but I was smart enough to have made a copy of it. I really like the background on this picture, all though I have no idea what's going on with the boat. It looks pretty bad. Oh well, I had a lot of fun with this one. It's Pirates of Cape Suzette!

I went for a painted style on these following pictures, sadly they are painted in Photoshop. I have recently learned how to paint by hand, but it always ends up on my shirt and not the canvas. So, I prefer the computer when it comes to painting.
http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/becky06copy.jpg
I saw this guy one time who could paint cartoons so that they looked pretty life like. So I thought, Hey! If he can do it so can I! Well I couldn't. But I still had a lot of fun trying. People always ask me "Why did you make her eyes so spooky?" So needless to say this work has been dubbed "Stare Bear" by friends and family alike. Quite unnerving...isn't it?

Belinda (mm… it's her name, right? I can't remember, sorry) is good but there are some anatomy problems. Also on this painting I don't really like the background… maybe a little bit too… well I don't know how to say that in English: “filled”, or “full-filled”?
But the painting of Rebecca is astonishing! Really excellent. Anatomy is fine (or just maybe the opened hand which seems just a little bit bigger than the closed one), colors are great. No really, excellent painting!:)

Thanks Arif! Have you ever tried GIMP to color your characters? That's what I started out with before I got Photoshop. And in some ways I think I like GIMP better.

If you can't remember her name no problem. ;) I have Bowlinda who is a Turtle Monster, and than there's Belinda the Scottish Skunk. Belinda is my favorite girls name but I probably shouldn't have used it for two characters names...it just confuses people.
Anyways, about Bowlinda's anatomy in the painting, can you tell me what you think is wrong? Is it her arms, legs or something else? Just wanna make sure I don't mess up next time.
About the background, when you look at it, does it make your head feel like it's going to explode? That's what it does to me, I went overboard and made the background way too busy.
But the painting of Rebecca is astonishing! Really excellent. Anatomy is fine (or just maybe the opened hand which seems just a little bit bigger than the closed one), colors are great. No really, excellent painting!:)

This is Logan. He's the younger brother of Sophie, and best friends to Belinda. This was a rough that I didn't feel like finishing, but you get the idea.
http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/Logan2.jpg
Logan is a fun loving guy, but a bit of a goof-up. Sophie always has to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't get into trouble. He's quite accident prone, in fact he's always getting his tie caught in stuff. Looks like he got it stuck in a Pickle Jar today. Ah! Look out for that banana peel! You know the funny thing is, Logan doesn't even like pickles!

Looking good Seth.
Glad to see you posting again.
You said you "couldn't draw a pose that well" if you tried.
You can't fool me. I don't believe that for a minute!
In looking at your last image (of Belinda) you've got a nice pose already but I think I see the prime element that would make it a stronger pose; a clearer silhouette.
In the case of Belinda losing her icecream I'm not sure how you'd get the strongest silhouette without restaging her. I suppose you could drop the hand with the cone down and free it from the silhouette of her tail.
One thing to to consider when posing is rather the pose is an action shot (i.e. you capture the pose at a critical point in the action) or if the character is mugging in front of a camera. Most still imagery seems to be mugging as if for the cover of a magazine.
Besides Silhouettes there are two things that Don has emphasized that may work well to help generate stronger poses (well... he's mentioned more but two come immediately to mind here); Thumbnailing and Naming your Actions.
If you don't already thumbnail out a few quick sketches in the sequence of what is happening you might try to do that. Try to spot the thumbnail that catches the best pose that communicates a named action. Perhaps in Belinda's case that action word might be "Disaster". "Crying over spilt milk" would work too but if you can use one word that'll work even better. If you can, try to capture the action.
I understand that yours is an image capturing 'after the action'.
As such its a pretty good pose communicating the results of that action.
For what its worth, I think your poses will improve through the process of thumbnailing and naming your actions.
Keep on posting!
Thanks for the advice, Rodney! I will try to keep it in mind, but I have such a tiny brain! I'm going to have to start thumbnailing more.
Anyways, I drew a picture for a girl at work. She really likes my character Bowlinda and wanted a picture of her. It was Inked and colored by hand. She has a lot of anatomy problems, but hopefully I won't make the same mistake twice. The cape was fun to draw.....I can't forget to mention that!

Heya Seth,I think you're on the right track and she has potential to be a great character. Make sure you watch out for tangents in your drawings, there's one where the gun(?) and thigh meet. Also, you might try making the hat a little bigger than the head.Try varying your shapes and proportions a bit more. You've used the belt and pant cuff to equally split the pose in two. It's a great idea having a female lion as a cop.

Ha ha. No, that's suppose to be Wendy's aunt! When I was younger, a good friend and myself would whittle away the hours drawing Mario comics. We felt we needed a new villain to keep things interesting, and I figured Bowser having a sis who was always competing with him would make for a good story.
Anyways, years later she's still one of my favorite characters to draw, and she brings back good some memories. :)
In closing.....I've always had trouble with poses for some reason. I'll beat it someday. Thanks for the encouragement!

You know... those really are some spiffy looking hands. If you are going to keep drawing them like that I'll be happy to take some credit!
For those curious, the tip I attempted to pass on to Seth was my interpretation of Don's shorthand methodology for drawing hands. I haven't quite fully assimilated it myself (as I don't understand it!) but I look for it in Don's drawings every chance I get. I highly encourage everyone to look for it as well as he generally uses only four or five quickly drawn lines to establish the hands proper placement. As far as I'm concerned... it's magic.
Post more drawings Seth!

Well I finally got all the way into this gallery after Seth asked I check it out over a week ago... I bet i know WHY too!
Holy crap, fan art! I'm floored, man. I love fan art.. I never.. NEVER expected that. I could comment about whats right and wrong in terms of character drawing if you like.. but honestly, I never care about those things when someone else does the drawing, I just LOVE fan art! I will say, props to you for actually putting her in a costume! Something even I have failed to do. I mean.. I've barely ever colored her. And here you are.. doing a full one with background. Wow. I just got upstaged.
I would really like to put this on my site if you're cool with that. you'll be credited!!
Now aside from fan art...
My favorite drawing of this whole bunch is the boat picture. Yeah okay the boat has issues, but the picture itself feels like a scene from a TV show. I say show rather than movie because your style reminds me of disney cartoons. And I know you know the ones.. tale spin, duck tales, bonkers.. etc. Speaking of which, your cop lady reminds me of Bonkers. Theres also a very tiny toons type feeling to these.. which is cool. That was a great show :)
You have a very animateable style, so when you get going with it, things will be that more easy for you!
If I only have one thing to say, I'd suggest practicing anatomy for awhile. You're doing animals- but human styled.. Anthro would be the term. As someone who does this alot myself, I know that the better you get at drawing humans- the better it will make your animals feels. Anthro, anyway. I noticed you often seem to have trouble with the legs and weight distribution, thats pretty common, so don't worry about it. But BECAUSE you always do animals, try switching it up to see where that takes you, and then come back. I'd put money on it making you better! :)
Thanks Nate! Glad you like the picture. I was afraid maybe you had seen it a while ago and didn't care for it! Yeah, you're more than welcome to put it on your site. For some reason unknown to me, I fell in love with Lily's design. She's so much fun to draw.
Thanks for the comments on my drawings! I always appreciate advice that will make me better. I would totally agree with you that I need to draw more people. I think a lot of my problem is I grew up drawing all the Talespin and Ducktales characters so they are burnt into my brain. And I guess I'm just too afraid to try and get out of my comfort zone of drawing anything else. But I will try to draw more people! (Yeah! I like fanart too! :D)

I get the comfort zone, I do. And yeah sorry man, I got your message but I've been having a hell of a past 2 weeks (in the bad sense) so I stayed clear of the forums until just today....
Anyway, fan art is awesome. And don't be surprised if I hit return the favor ;)
Also, i showed the drawing to two friends who know Lily too:
Dark Soraji: Wow, it almost comes off Disney.
FoxxDragon311: very disney. thats his style
Dark Soraji: Well, that's awesome. Totally out of the blue?
Dark Soraji: And Lily, of all characters. That's amazing.
neuronyx: Holy crap! : D That's so cool! Who did it?
FoxxDragon311: this guy Seth, from the don bluth class
neuronyx: Totally awesome. I love that style!
FoxxDragon311: I will tell him :)
neuronyx: Good!
Sorry to hear you're going through bad times. I hope things get better for you.

Thanks for posting those conversations. It's nice to know someone likes my style. I have too many negative people in my life always coming down on my artwork. Those comments put a smile on my face. :)
Oh yeah! I got halfway through coloring her....and I was like...wait a minute? What color is her skin/scales? That's why I asked you that obscure question about it.

You too? Must be coincidence. Janice took me to eat at this place called X-treme Pita and I had a Buffalo Wing Pita with Peppers. I was so sick. :( <- Wish we had a barfy face smile.

Hey, Seth! I really enjoy your artwork, man! It's cooler than Colonel Spigot's icebox during a Thembrian snowstorm! (A TaleSpin reference! Oh yeah, I went there! :D) I really love the style you draw your characters in, too. Though, I'm kind of biased because I prefer to draw cutesy cartoon animals as well! You made the comment on my art that your posing is very static, but I'd have to disagree. Much of your work seems to convey motion and depth. Really looking forward to seeing more, my fellow Seth! Keep it up!

Thanks AJ! I'm not sure about the drawing of people thing. I don't do it often and my drawings are always embarrassing looking. Especially after seeing yours in the Seminar. Those were amazing!
Hey, Seth! I really enjoy your artwork, man! It's cooler than Colonel Spigot's icebox during a Thembrian snowstorm! (A TaleSpin reference! Oh yeah, I went there! ) Oooh! I couldn't have said that better myself! That comment was so awesome, I had a tear in my eye.
Well, at the request of the other Seth, I'm going to post some drawings from a dream I had a while back. The dream was quite amazing. I was sitting in a movie theater all by myself (which was cool, because I hate when you have that kid behind you who kicks the back of your seat through the whole movie) I saw the entire movie play out in full color. It was pretty Spiffy.
This is the main character, Campbell. He lives in a junk yard in the future. A future where everybody owns a jet pack but himself. He looks up in the sky and sees all the humans, dogs and other cat with their jet packs. He wants to have his own jet pack so bad he rigs one up out of an old fire extinguisher. When he does his first test drive he looses control and goes through the windshield of Rusalka's space shuttle, causing her to crash in the junkyard. Rusalka is a Russian Astrocat who was returning from her mission on Mars when Campbell caused her to crash.

Ah, here we go! Finally, I get to see those dream characters of yours! I like Rusalka's design especially. There's something about a cat character with a fishbowl helmet and a zappy gun that always makes me smile. :) ...What? Surely, there's other cat characters with fishbowl helmets and zappy guns out there! Don't look at me like that! I can't endure your piercing gaze! NOT THE FACE, NOOOOOO!
...Ahem, anyway, I should point out another coincidental fact that's sure to add to our similar weirdness...ness... In my dream about The Dragon Stone, there was ALSO a character named Rusalka! I kid you not! Do you know what this means? It means I'm suing you for subconscious dream copyright infringement! You'll never work in this town again, kid! It's all down the drain for you now! You'll--awwww, I can't stay mad at you. You're a fellow Seth. Stop giving me those puppy Seth eyes, I can't take it! Okay, okay! I'm sorry for everything! *sobs* :(
Anyway, thanks so much for sharing these, Seth! If you decide to draw more from that dream, I'd really like to see it. :D

Ok, alright. I'll post something. For the fans. Sheesh, I can't stand all the emails about posting something. I mean, I do have a life outside the forums guys! Like, playing on my Company Bowling Team! That's a 100 times better than cartoons? Right?
I really haven't had anything worth showing lately. but I did do this drawing for a lady I work with. She wanted a cute picture of two of my original characters because she things it will be worth something when I become famous. Imagine that. I think she's going to be disappointed when it doesn't get any bids on Ebay.

I always wanted to do one of those picture that have like a ton of characters on it looking all grumpy. This is the only one I've ever done that sorta worked out. Roll Call, top left to right. Belinda, Ezmeralda, Bowlinda, Sophie and Rusalka. Or for those who could care less you can call em' all Sophie. Doesn't matter.

Seriously though, this latest picture is really cool! I see very subtle differences in the styles of each of the characters in this group. It's very cool how you managed to do that but still keep a sense of conformity in your technique. It really does look like something you'd see for a Smash Bros. Marvel VS. This a new character of mine. Saba the Sabertooth. She comes from a Nomadic type tribe where she leads her people to victory. Often moving place from place, her people are hunters and gathers.
I was going to shade this picture but I got really bored with it and decided to just finish it as fast as I could. I just don't have the coloring skills of another Seth I know. Enjoy.

Very nice Seth!
As much as I like the first... it's the second one that really grabs my attention. It's got a lot of dynamic tension to it.
Stop getting bored so easily.
Draw.
Post.
Draw.
Post.
[rinse and repeat as necessary]
Do more of this kind of stuff! :)
I have only one crit of the second image... a simple crit.
I think one of her knees should be farther down (in?)
That would convey a sense of weight as if she were really up there sitting on that mound.
Added: Okay... one more thought.
If you squint your eyes you can almost make out a different character with the knees becoming arms and the mound becoming a dress. That indicates to me that there is room for some adjustment to the silhouette.
The skulls are a nice touch too!
Really fun character.
Keep it up!

After looking at the first image again I think those color shapes would animate really well. Animating your other brother Seth's colored characters would be a chore and a half!
Perhaps somewhere between the two is the ideal animated color combination but flat shaded images is a really good place to begin.
Thanks for the encouragement, Rodney. You are so right about the silhouette of Saba. It doesn't matter how many times I hear/read about the clear looking silhouette rule I always seem to forget it when I'm drawing.
I have something new today. A character who isn't an animal! I thought I would try something new. Like washing my socks for the first time, kind of thing.
This characters name is Ezmeralda. Even though she's filthy rich her favorite past time is stealing. She has everything she wants, so she steals for the thrill of it. Here she is as herself. http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/ezziealias0002.jpg
When Ezmeralda isn't gulping down wine, she is donned in her Cat Burglar Costume going place to place through France. Stealing anything of high value, her favorites are paintings. She is such a famous Cat Burglar that when she steals a painting that artists work becomes famous. Stealing wasn't hard enough for her, so she started wearing bells to make the stakes higher. http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/ezziesmall.jpg
Well, that's it for today. Thanks guys.

Fun character Seth! :)
I really like her backstory.
You have a knack for character creation.
Added: I really really like that first drawing. There is so much going on and great detail. Interestingly while exploring the storytelling throughout the image my attention keeps returning right back to her face. It's a great pose that suggests she's got something to say.
The second one is just pure fun... perhaps a moment out of time when she poses for a picture while the paparazi yell and point, "There she goes again!"? *!Flash!* The image is plastered right there on the front page of tomorrow's newspaper with the heading "Cat Burglar Strikes Again".
Fun stuff Seth.
Fun character Seth! :)

Thanks, Rodney! That means a lot. I'm Glad you like her. I have some other characters to her story, but I haven't quite finished their designs yet. So perhaps in the future.
IT's Bowlinda! My oldest of all characters! I don't know what she's so excited about but it probably involves candy! Oh yeah, she did say something about going to Mario's 25th Anniversary Party! Wish I was invited. Hey, Bowlinda! Eat all of his cake for me! http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/bowsie0001.jpg
I was getting tired of the cold winter here in New York, so I thought about being at the beach. Then I remembered that everyone their always has a better figure than me, and that there is too many people crowding the beach, and oh yeah, I don't know how to swim. Now that I think about it, winters not that bad. Anyways, that's what inspired my drawing today. Belinda at the beach. http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/belindacantswim0001.jpg

Thanks, Rodney! This picture is so saved. I'll celebrate every post if you'll color them! And don't worry about it, you colored her way better than I ever could!
My picture today has a Cameo! That's right, Seth and Amanda's evil Goblin Princess Rubella. When they first showed her to me I instantly fell in love with her character design. My drawing doesn't do justice to her, and I didn't ask permission to use her so hopefully they're not sue happy! :)
Well, I don't know much about her personality, being that she's not my character. But since she's a Goblin, and Goblins usually eat living things I thought it would be fun to draw her cooking my character Belinda and Logan. Logan doesn't mind, he's enjoying the free apples. AND I'm sorry, Belinda. But Tofu Burgers are not GOOD!

Nice one Seth! :)
I started to color this one too but had to break away from it.
I've got it just beyond the halfway point and will try to return and finish it in a few days.
The story that must be going on behind this image.... um... what can be said. Interesting!
..and tofu burgers... sounds yummy!
Thanks, Rodney! I was thinking it would be fun to make a 1-page comic of the Rubella situation. How are they going to get out of that pot? Perhaps they will make life-sized vegetable sculptures of themselves when Rubella isn't looking!
Well, I saw the New "True Grit" movie today, and so I was inspired to draw a Western Cow Boy picture of Logan. Instead, it just turned into Logan, as a COW-boy. Hmmm, not sure how that happened.
Anyway, Belinda is quite disgusted to find out where her Milk came from, worse than that it's past expiration.

I think this last drawing represents something new for you (at least it is from my perspective).
Logan's style in this drawing is wonderfully expressive.
It's an out of the norm pose that perfectly fits the moment.
More importantly I think it suggests a turn in style that will help make these characters even more expressive than I had perceived before.
Of course my initial thought story-wise was that Logan is reacting to yet other careless shopper spilling milk in his store. He just wants to do his Dairy Demo, earn a few dollars and get the heck out of that Cow-boy suit!
Good thing I wasn't drinking milk or I would've been laughing it out my nose. I can easily see Logan hyper-reacting as the Cow-boy. *Chuckle*Snort*
I'm not sure if you are familiar with Jeff Smith's 'Bone' comic book but I see it as a tip of the hat to his now classic story also.

Thanks Rodney, I was trying to go for a loosey goosey style. I didn't care how it looked I just tried to have fun with it. Turned out better than I thought it would.

Indeed I am. :) Have a few of his comics. Thanks for the complement!
Belinda, the Scottish girl raised by Natives! Nah, not really, she's just getting in touch with her inner Squaw! For some reason I feel like some Toast with Land O' Lakes Butter. She'd also make a good Plumber.

Really fun drawings too.
I'm not sure where you get your ideas but keep it up.
You surprise me with every post.
...now... regarding some of these energetic scenes like the last one... I do occasionally worry about Logan's sanity!
Added: Belinda reminds me of someone... maybe Mary Tyler Moore?
I had such a crush on her when I was a kid.
Thanks, Rodney. Ha ha Mary Tyler Moore, yeah she was pretty cute back in the day.
Todays picture features some home counseling! When Belinda and Logan can't stop fighting, Sophie suggests the Puppet Route. That's right! What better way to tell your loved one off than with a smiling puppet?

Sadly this didn't come out as well as I would've liked it to. I couldn't find my favorite Pencil. So, I had to use one of those No. 2 Pencils that you fill out your Multiple-Choice Tests in Middle School with. Yeah, you know the ones! Can't figure out what happened to all 4 of my good pencils. They just disappeared one by one. I think a monster is probably to blame. You know, like the creature who tangles all the cords behind your TV. Or the Fairy who sucks your Contact Lens down the drain. Or that thing in your Washing Machine that eats your other matching sock!

I took the opportunity to test out CorelTrace's autotrace feature to convert this last drawing from raster to vector. I'm afraid I'll have to call this a failed attempt as it took entirely too much refinement to get to a workable vector image. Working with Belinda and Logan made it a fun test though!
Each time I color an image I gain more respect for the cel painters of old and today's color stylists. I also understand the importance of changing shapes and silhouettes more with each attempt. Cleanup Artists really earn their pay when they refine rough images and get them ready for final color. They are the unsung heroes in the animation arena.

I know you'll see the areas I messed up on and interpreted wrong... SORRY ABOUT THAT! I don't do bad for a single guy! ;) Somehow down the road I can see my Wife making a comment about me watching too many cartoons! As for the picture, I love the color job. The text, and text bubbles are awesome looking too!
This picture isn't that great, but what the heck I'll share it anyway. Sophie and Belinda are enjoying Icy Cream, but poor Logan is still buried in the sand! Don't worry Logan, Belinda got the last of the Ice Cream anyways!
http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/icecream0001.jpg
This picture is kind of silly. OK! A lot silly! I was thinking about how much I felt like a Worker Bee at work. And thus this picture idea was born! In this scene Logan is a CAT-a-pillar. Yeah, I said it. He's in love with Belinda the Bee, but he knows he can never fly like her. Or can he!? Little does Logan know, that some day when he emerges from his Cocoon he will no longer be an Ugly Grub, but a beautiful Monarch TigerFly! By then he'll probably meet some ButterFly Babe and go South for the Winter. Man, this doesn't sound like a very happy Children's Book!

This is my newest character "Miss Xbalanque (SHi BA lan KAY) Chevis ( SHEV-iss) Or for short, Miss Chevis. (Say it fast!) Her design is based off an Ankylosaurus (Club Tail Dino) and Mayan Culture. She is the Royal Ruler of the Dyna Mayan People. Cruel, selfish and real fun at parties. She has convinced her people that she is their God and needs Sacrifices. Xbalanque is known Nemesis to Saba the Sabertooth (earlier character in my Thread) Saba's people are often the main course for Sacrifices, or their pelts are used for Xbalanque's Saber Warriors. Obviously this isn't cool with Saba who constantly Wars with Xbalanque and her people.

Alright Seth... I know you've been drawing.
Fess up!
Until you post the next drawing I'll have to be content with reviewing past imagery.
I can easily see the Cat-a-pillar sequence in the movie playing out almost as in the "Pink Elephants" sequence in 'Dumbo'. Lots of solid bright vibrant colors as Logan chases after his dream-girl.
The 'I-scream for Ice cream' would make a classic comic book pin-up or fold out poster!
Fun characters.
"Ahaw Tz'am Kaloomte" would make a great resin sculpture. Although at the moment I'm visualizing her more as a great stone giant that is coming to life and chasing after our favorite heroes. :)
This was drawn for Rodney. He's a Marvel fan for those who don't know. Rodney is the backbone of the Forum. If it wasn't for him I think this place would be a lot less positive. Meeting him at the Master Class I have to say I don't think a Negative thing came out of his mouth the whole week. He was quite refreshing to talk to compared to the rest of society who only looks for fault. (Myself included) So next time Rodney posts in your thread...you better appreciate it!
Logan as Wolverine, because they are both named Logan.
Sophie as Captain America because of her thirst for justice and because Captain America is just so darn cool!
And Belinda as Scarlet Witch because....um, uh.....she looks really good in red and pink.

Seth,
I'd buy that comic book in a heartbeat!
I see a lot of my favorite artists represented there... Jack Kirby (at his finest), Frank Miller (in his early years), Herb Trimpe (unsung comics hero), John Busema (Illustrator extraordinaire) and Seth Snyder (new hope for comics and animation). Who am I missing?
Right. Logan... comic book character that wants to draw (and be ) a superhero.
Thanks for the kind words. My family and friends keep me thinking positive.
As I was telling you before, I wish I were a rich man because I'd love to publish some of the great artwork from all the talented people in the world, especially those whose positive energy brings a smile to our faces and makes the path worth traveling.

Thanks Rodney! :)
Very cool I like your style
Wah? I have a style? I didn't notice it I guess. Thanks for the comment.
very cool seth, some of the best work i've seen you do

Thanks Lavalle! I have to be honest I haven't been practicing animation in quite some time. I don't feel comfortable enough with my basic art skills yet to really jump into animation. I'm probably going to try and start working on it again soon.
Ok.....for this picture to make sense I'm going to have to do some explaining....
and then you still won't get it. I apologize for this in advance.
So I had a crazy messed up dream where I was playing a new video game for my Super Wiii Station X-720 What was the game? Super Smash Bros. Vs. Capcom: Fate of Two Worlds Brawl 3!!!!!! Are you not impressed? Who wouldn't want to play as Ryu and Luigi on the same amazing Tag Team!? Well, turns out the plot is this evil man guy (who isn't a Capcom or Nintendo character I might add) is trying to find this Genie's Lamp so he can wish for World Domination! (Insert Evil Laugh Here) But Ryu and Luigi are all like "we ain't gonna take this just eating cake n' ice cream!" So you play through 7 stages of pure arse whoopin' only to get the Genie's Lamp yourself. And who is this Genie? Why it's no other than Krystal from Star Fox Adventures! Why, because it just makes perfect sense for her to be a Genie....I mean she's blue and um....she's um, uh blue......
Moving on! I can only deduce that this dream is from playing too much Smash Bros. and Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 in one sitting.....and I guess Krystal is a Genie because Genie from Disney's Aladdin is blue? Eh, I dunno. Capcom, Nintendo? There ya go, I gave you guys an idea, I gave you a plot, I even did fanart and the games not even out yet! You guys can thank me later.
But yeah, that's what inspired this no sense drawing... she did only give you one wish....that's kind of cheap considering you have a Tag Team. Poor Ryu, now he won't be able to wish for a True Warrior to fight because Luigi wished for Lavalle to finish his Luigi Linguine Cartoon.

Like I said over GT, I really love the background on this one, Seth! You really nailed setting up the proper atmosphere and mood for the shot! Personally, I think Belinda looks better in Simon's outfit than Simon does. Go figure! XD Nice work on the shading too! I'm glad those shading lessons I gave you are helping out. Once you get the cel shading down, I'd like to see you try a more softer style, like the kind me and Amanda use. :)

Seth,
By way of feedback I offer my interpretation on your last posting.
It's my long winded way of saying, "You're background looks a little bit too much like it's all on a flat plane."
I thought exploring the idea of Belinda performing the role of a Vampire Slayer a little further would be fun as well so, your image made it's way into my post production re-staging.
Yes, a bit too much time playing (and I apologize for messing with your image!) but I was enjoying getting lost in the various aspects of Layout, Lighting and Staging. Yes, I should have been working through your latest and greatest scripts. Believe it or not... I am!
Keep posting Seth!

For a little more insight into my thoughts, here is what I had written before deciding to put my response aside and think about it for a while (I discovered I hadn't yet deleted it so I'm posting it here):
My thoughts are twofold here:
- Consider where the light is coming from
- Establish depth in the scene (foreground, background and middle ground)
Because of a lack in visual depth cues the background seems to be more of a 2D prop. (which if taken literally has some interesting possibilities in storytelling... something that could be turned to good advantage). Perhaps Belinda is dressed up for a play and the background is a painting hanging down from the rafters just behind her on the stage? At this point I can live in this illusionary state because I don't see her feet planted on the ground (or on a stage). In this way my imagination is free to explore, interpret and determine what makes sense.
(and with that I was off thinking about other things until I decided to put Belinda on the stage)
Some of my recent drawings. I've been trying to get some emotion and story telling going on in my pictures.

Nessie and her pal MacQuack from the new Disney short. I'm not sure if MacQuack is a living creature, or not. I hear he's suppose to be a Rubber Duck, but since I didn't know that at the time I drew this.....oh well. Was still fun to draw.

Like I told you over GT, Seth, your work is improving by leaps and bounds! This latest batch of pictures is testament to that. Just keep yourself motivated and keep drawing any chance you get, mah boi! :D
Tdharris: I did? You Do? Thanks Tyeesha! I always wanted to learn how to draw Marvel Characters. But spending most of my life drawing Disney Style has made it pretty hard to pick up more serious styles like Marvel. Anyway, thanks for the comments and glad you liked them. :)
Mai Boi: Thanks, bro. I'm finally staring to feel like I'm making progress for once. It feels good.

cool work man Treasure planet had some real strong designs and some that fell flat. Looks awesome man
I don't really post here anymore....but my friend Poulpette inspired me to come back. So here is some sketches.
Xbalanque the Mayan Dinosaur. Or Ankylosaurus to be specific. This was done mostly as an anatomy study of the character. http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/MissChevis3.jpg
My new character Arlene the cow. I wanted to stay away from the Farm Girl stereotype as much as possible so I made her a Hawaiian dancer.
http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/cowgirl.jpg
Saba the Saber tooth lying in the bushes while hunting.
http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv113/Sethro89/SabaLay5.jpg
And finally one of my favorite characters, Sophie. She's all fired up over something.

Very nice Seth!
My favorite of these has to be the Xbalanque update. Wow, what an impressive power-projecting stance. It definitely communicates, "Don't mess with me."
It's pretty rare that anyone breaks away from the farm-stereotype for cows. Good on you there!
Saba... she looks right at home in her native territory.
Sophie... looks like she just got out of the beauty parlour and someone is already causing her trouble.
You have a nice sense of confidence in all of your linework here.
Keep that up!
...and thanks to Poulpette for convincing you to stick around!

Hi Seth,
It’s a good thing that you decided to post again.
You’re really improving as time goes by. I really like Arlene, because as Rodney said, it’s rare to break away from stereotypes. Thus I like her cute face. And I also like Sophie. She’s really expressive. Maybe there is just a little problem with her right leg. I think that the belt is too low, or perhaps it’s her leg that is not long enough, even if it’s bend.
The other characters are well-drawn, but I just have no particular feelings with them.:p

You are getting really good with the digital artistry Seth!
Keep that up!
One suggestion: I like the interesting texture you have to the color (mostly seen in the larger shapes). I wonder if that might not be more effective if it is applied to one or the other but not both of the elements in the image. By that I mean that if that texture is applied to the character the background might be a solid color (or some other texture) and vice versa, if the texture is applied to the background it might not be as prevalent in the character. This would provide an added level of contrast between background and character. You've got that going on a little in the bird character and that may be one of the many reasons I find myself attracted to that image.
Edit: I think 'Contrast' is the word I was really looking for here. When all the shades/hues are the same it's harder to get a sense of the depth in a 2D plane. Enhancing the contrast will resolve that.
Over all I like how you are really working with solid shapes here. I think you are on to something here.
The white outline around the characters is nice and I understand that will make it a lot easier to manipulate them. I'd love to see how these looked if that white was set to about 66 percent transparency.
Rock on Seth.
You have been missed!

Those colored lines are also exquisite.
Great technique.
I've been looking at these images for quite awhile and they are very compelling. Every where I look there is something interesting to see. The facial expressions in each are very emotive. Melinda, for instance... so perfectly projects her attitude that I sense that you must have been referring to an image that demonstrated that feeling.
I'm still not quite sure what to think about the image of Belinda without lines. One time I look at it I think that is really great and then the next time I think... if it had lines around there it'd be even greater. Hehe. It's definitely got the look of line-less cel shading.

Hi Seth,
Your characters are all fun to look at. My only concern is that the "breasts" on the female characters might make them less believable. I think it all depends on how human you want to make the animals and what their characters are about. For example, I liked the design of Goldie from Rockadoodle, but some critics were disturbed by the idea of a "sexy chicken." I hope experienced animators can give you feedback on that. My feeling is that as long as you are conveying the character you intend, you can make the design as anthropomorphic as you like.

Martha,
I'm not sure why I am starting the new year out on this subject but... welcome to 2012!
The subject of breasts on anthropomorphic characters could be a tricky one so its usually best to just cut to the chase and suggest that these characters are not animals but rather people that just happen to look like animals. They come from a very long tradition (think Disney and pre Disney characters and suddenly the clouds begin to disappear).
If we were to use the proper formula and draw real animals as anthropomorphized people we would be in the unenviable position of using the forumula: 2x*L. Which is to say that the number of teets drawn on any given character would be a ratio of twice that of the average litter of that species.
Real animals don't talk and do the things we do and they certainly don't have the same characterizations. But it is fun to imagine what we might do if we were them, or perhaps more appropriately, if they were more like us.
I am such a wealth of useless knowledge...

Nice to see some of your drawings, Seth. :)
Like Rodney said, you’re really improving. That’s good, keep up the good work!
I previously told you what I thought about the color of the outlines. I think that for now it’s maybe too light.
Otherwise, I do appreciate your progress.
Hope to see other of your drawings soon. :)
