Hi guys,
I hesitated to open my own thread because I don't animate anything yet, but I'm working on poses, observation, etc. so I guess that won't take too long before I start to do some roughs and try to animate them, and well, I saw that I'm not the only one showing sketches, so here I go.
I selected some pictures of mine and I post them by chronological order.
As we are limited to using 4 images per message, I will post other messages after this one. I hope you don't mind.

A character I created in high school. That was my German teacher.

Working on anatomy (that's hard…)

In my introduction thread I said I stopped drawing at the age of 15/16. Actually I kept drawing a little bit, but well, something like a dozen pictures a year… it's nothing, eh.

Hello Poulpette.
It's really nice to see the progress you've made throughout these sketches and drawings. I like some of your hands, and the T-rex is impressive!
Lamas are looking great. So are gorillas.
Some of your anatomy sketches may miss some good proportion I think, but I'm not expert.
I think Lamas are my favorite.
I hope you will be able to animate a bit some of these characters.

Hi Jeckos,
Thanks for your comments.
You're right for anatomy sketches, I have to work on proportions, which are not always good.

Hi there,
I finally decided to take the plunge and try to animate something.
Nothing special of course, just the traditional bouncing ball. But that was not easy… well actually, the most difficult part was to find a “good” software on GNU/Linux to make stop-motion animation.
I used Stopmotion which is not that bad for me.
So, here it is :
Bouncing Ball Animation [format: AVI | size: 299Ko | direct link to video] (http://poulpettedelamare.com/misc/animation/bouncing_ball.avi)

I didn't have so much time to draw those past few weeks, you know, new school year and all.

This new musical school year is really interesting, but wow… I got so much work!
I'm just working, working, and… working. I don't have so much time to draw, and that pi**es me off, but well, I have no choice.
Here are some observation sketches I've just done tonight. It's done from Tarzan, le livre du film… I suppose it's Tarzan Chronicles in English, but I'm not sure.

Er, I mean observational drawing, what with the Lost World special feature people and all. I doubt you were actually there on set, and if you were I better hear some good stories about it! x3
Poulpette

@Moneyguns → Which one? Top of the page? If it is the one you mean, then it's not the leg, it's a rough of the body (with a head which is… really not well-drawn. :D But that was not what I was working on).
@LaurenWilsonArt → Thank you. :)
Well, about The Lost World, you're right, I was not on the set (or those sketches would be very old). I did them from “The Making of The Lost World – Jurassic Park”.

cool turnaround,I like the penguin.
I am really enjoying ubuntu and all its cool features I have it running on an 8gig stick and works great! :D but I still mainly use windows becuase of some main programs !
Im used to all three and like them all :) their all good in their own way!
Wow....your hands are amazing! And for your first turnaround sheet that's really good. I've made a dozen turnaround sheets and they don't look anywhere as great.

Some observations from an old Disney book (actually a book to learn words ).
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/etudes/2009_12/obs11_600px.png
For some of my drawings, if you want to enlarge (sometimes there are things difficult to see), just remove the “_600px” from the file name in the URL.
Hope I'll have time to draw a little bit more… but I miss time.:(
You amaze me. You're like a human photo copier. I could never duplicate drawings like that. By the way, do you have any cartoon characters of your own hidden up your sleeve? If you do I would love to see them. :)
Poulpette
12-11-2009, 05:19 AM
Thank you but I'm not a human photo copier.
Actually there are some “errors” on my drawings, such as the lion's mane which is not long enough on the right side. :)
By the way, do you have any cartoon characters of your own hidden up your sleeve? If you do I would love to see them. :)
No I don't have personal characters for the moment. Like I said in my… introduction post I think, I stopped drawing some years ago, and now I first want to improve my skill so I'm just “working” when I draw (if you see what I mean by “working”). But as I have a video game project with a cartoon style I'm now trying to draw some personal characters. So I'll post my roughs soon.

Some researches I made today for my video game project.
This is Aphonia, and she's a villain.
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/projets/harmony/aphonia_rs1.png
The story should take place in a middle aged and magical (but not that much though) kingdom where music is everywhere. I mean everybody is playing the music. Aphonia used to be a great classical singer until the day she discovered a new “kind” of music which is quite exclusively… noise (who said hard rock/metal?).By dint of “singing” noise, she turned voiceless. Don't ask me why, but she asked her brother (the king) to let this music be part of the musical style of the Kingdom; of course, he refused. She turned hysterical and promised to make him pay for his refusal.
So, here are my first attempts to define the character. On the right I tried to draw her in a quite simple and classical medieval dress. On the left, I tried to make her look less old-fashioned, but not that much. I add a kind of black belt and gave her a black bracelet with some nails you know… this is for the rock/metal touch.
I still have a lot of problems when I have to draw arms/hands and legs/feet. On the rough where she's yelling they're particularly strange.
Nice character! :) You're making a video game, huh? Are you doing it all by yourself, or are you working with friends?
Poulpette
12-12-2009, 12:43 AM
I've got one video game project that I work on with some people. We're working on the Internet for this.
For this game project, I would love to do it by myself. It will take some years, but that could be a great experience.

Hands studies, again and again… cartoon hands exactly.
Do you recognize the cartoon I studied?:)

ooh! I know this one! Is it Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers? One of my childhood favorites. :) By the way I was going to ask you, is that your favorite cartoon of all time?

Hello everyone,
I'm still copying some Disney characters.
As I always have problems with my scanner, the quality is not that good. So if you need to enlarge, just click on the pictures.
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/etudes/2009_12/obs13_600px.png (http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/etudes/2009_12/obs13.png)

I'll try to do some life drawings now. I think that would help me a lot, even if it's a difficult exercise…
Hello..
your study seems so good...but, it is so hazy and light..you can easily increase it contrast level in Photoshop....then, it will look more clear.....
Regards,
Arif
Poulpette
01-10-2010, 06:46 AM
Actually I can't.:(
I try to increase the contrast before scanning, but actually that was worse. This is because I draw without a… I don't know how to say. Without stressing too much?
I tried to change the contrast even on The Gimp, but it does nothing good. This is the best quality I can get.:(
lavallelee
01-10-2010, 11:32 AM
i really like the drawings! the dog is my favorite :)
jeremyhopkins
01-10-2010, 02:33 PM
I haven't used Gimp before but instead of contrast in photoshop, I used layers and set them to linear burn:
http://xsheet.net/pictures/test/obs13_600px.jpg
You have a very nice, solid, line quality in your work!
Poulpette
01-10-2010, 02:57 PM
Thank you lavallelee. :)
Jeremy, thank you for the tip. I've never really used software for drawings and I didn't know how to increase the contrast. I've never thought about layers.
I've learned something today. Thank you!
Very Nice as usual! I don't know how you do it. Did you by chance do the Model Sheets for Rescue Rangers?
Oh, by the way. My scanner is a real jerk too!
Poulpette
01-17-2010, 06:46 AM
I'm trying to draw some more “personal” characters, and er… it's difficult. But I'm gonna work hard and in a few months it should be better.:D
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/croquis/2010_01/croc1_600px.png (http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/croquis/2010_01/croc1.png)
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/croquis/2010_01/croc2_600px.png (http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/croquis/2010_01/croc2.png)
On the first one the big head on the left (the guy smiling) is a copy from Tom Bancroft's book. So are three roughs on the second picture (on the top right-hand corner, the kind of rabbit and the guy on the left, and the man just below him).
You certainly can draw people. I draw too much Talespin so my human drawings skills are low. :o
Anyways, I really like the character in the top right corner. I can't tell you why, I just do.
By the way, that's cool you're studying Tom Bancroft's book, I own it too! It's saved me out a few tight spots in the way of reference.

Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I've posted here. Too much work, not enough time to draw.
But now I'm in holidays, so I can make some little roughs again.
First, some hand studies based on Kahl's and Pontillas' hands:
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/etudes/2010_04/obs15.png
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/etudes/2010_04/obs16.png
And some bird studies from Blair's book:
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/etudes/2010_04/obs17_600px.png (http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/Dessins/etudes/2010_04/obs17.png)
In January when I asked what I should try to animate after the bouncing ball, Don told me that I should animate a little bird… the problem is that I just don't know how to draw birds, so I'm trying to draw them first before animating something.
Good to see you posting again. :) I see you're drawing more realistic hands. Are the hands in the 2nd picture down, drawn from real life? If I'm making any sense there.
As for the birds, your basic shape construction is realy good! As for myself, I still haven't grasped basic shapes yet. All my shapes look like sick turnips!
In short, keep drawing! Or Else! ;)
Sidney

Hello there.
Like I said, I’m back!
I decided to draw at least one hour a day. Don’t know if I’ll be able to do so when the new school year will start, but I’ll try not to give up.
So I’m trying to improve my drawing, which is… eh… pretty difficult, but it’s normal for the moment, right?
Tonight, I tried to animate a walking bouncing ball.
http://www.poulpettedelamare.com/misc/animation/walking_bouncing_ball.avi
Draw every day! DO IT!!!! Yes, improving drawing skills is difficult, unless you're some kind of freak of nature who is instantly talented at drawing. (But nobody really likes show-offs anyway :p )
Great work on the bouncing ball. Hhhmm..... it doesn't quite feel like a bouncing ball to me, but it seems like it would fit a Frog jumping perfectly! Anyway, keep up the good work. I hope to see more from you soon. :)
Poulpette
07-24-2011, 01:12 AM
A frog jumping? I never thought about that actually… But I should work on drawing frogs. It’s true that I could transform my animation then. Thank you for the idea.
Rodney
07-24-2011, 02:04 AM
Nice one!
It does have the feel of a frog.
As Seth suggests, more of a jump than a bounce.
When I look at the individual frames it does seem the animation should not flow as well as it is... so that surprised me a little. I really like the sense of acceleration you've got coming out of the contact as 'he' jumps upward again.
It's great to see you back here posting again. :)
