I do hope I'm not a bad guy for posting this.

As some of you may well be aware, there's an internet "celebrity" named the Nostalgia critic. He's part of a growing online movement in which regular run-of-the-mill people become reviewers of one sort of another. The critic is a reviewer of old school films and TV, as his name implies. His website, thatguywiththeglasses.com is very popular. And I have to confess, I do find him to be quite amusing. I don't think the guy is really as mean or cynical as his online character implies. ( He can be surprisingly sensitive as well as crass )

Recently, NC has been reviewing Don Bluth films ( along with his female counterpart, the Nostalgia chick ) And they aren't always too kind to our good friend Don. ( Though to be fair, the critic HAS also heaped praise on a number of Don's films, including a #1 spot at the top of his "Top 11 underrated nostalgic classics" for The Secret of Nimh. ) He also singled out The Small One in his Christmas special video.

( caution, these videos contain language that may not be appropriate for small children. Nothing TOO bad though )

I know Don is not a fan of cynicism, and I have to imagine he'd want nothing to do with all this. And perhaps people are giving the critic a little too much credit. After all, it's easy to badmouth a film and I'm certain the NC has never drawn a single frame of classical hand drawn animation in his life.

But I also know Don has a backbone and a sense of humor. And despite what appears to be some damning criticism aimed at his films, there's an underlying respect for Don from the critic. He even went so far to describe Don as "One of the greatest animation gods in history"

So the question is, Don, have you ever seen or heard of this? And if so, what do you think?

I always enjoy those reviews regardless of whether I agree with them or not cause they are just so darn entertaining. "The big lipped alligator moment!"

Yes, I forgot to mention that! "Big lipped alligator moment" has become a widely known and oft-used quip among the internet fathful ( and I've even heard it a few times on the streets )

Point is, despite the slams, there's a whole lot of respect for Don on that site.

I wouldn't use the term fail to describe the guy. As a matter of fact he's making some pretty good scratch from ad revenue. And I think anyone who starts up their own business deserves some respect ( Don himself broke off from Disney to form his own company ) Yeah, I know those are two different things, but he's not a jerk. You can tell he loves film and has an affinity for pop culture.

That said, I do understand that a lot of people won't like him. He's best watched in small doses.

I said above that I think the guy is funny. I don't work for him. Point is this subject was bound to come up eventually anyway.

And in a way you and I are in charge of Don's fan club, so there you go, "moderator" :}

I find the guy amusing too. First spotted him on Youtube years ago and enjoyed watching him review films from my childhood. He has what seems to be endless energy that makes him fun to watch compared to your average Joe.

But I missed the whole mess with the competition with the Angry Gaming Nerd, if I got the name right, then leaving youtube and creating that site.

The first ones I saw were films like Ninja Turtles movies, Street Fighter the movie, Mortal Kombat, etc. They were all fun, even if you disagreed. And back then, it was simply just a random youtube guy, not that big ugly site full of ads, but hey, why not make some cash too.

I will say when I was young and was taken to the theaters to see All Dogs go to Heaven, excited for it, a trailer came up of Rock-A-Doodle, it threw me a curveball. Maybe I was just outgrowing cartoons then, around 10, but it almost seemed embarrassing, especially in contrast to the darker film we were seeing. I didn't have the appreciation for animation then as I do now. I eventually saw it much older and enjoyed it for many reasons, I even recall doing a drawing of Peepers on a homework assignment in High School. I have to wonder what could of been from the cool designs that never made it, looked so different. While I like animation to appeal for adults too, I still think it's just as great to create something whimsical for young kids. Only normal to be disliked by adults, except for a few that see cartoons in another light like us.

I've seen one of his videos before and I must say even though it was harsh it was entertaining (didn't help that the movie really was terrible).

I'm still yet to load the videos linked here as they terribly slow. I've just managed to get past number 11. However I just wanted to say remember that critism is not your enemy. It hurts but that's part of learning how to better yourself and do a better job next time even if it's critism of something you've not worked on yourself. Nothing is perfect. :3

yeah, I love NC. doesn't sway my opinions, and I learn of movies I've never heard of before

I tend to watch him to see how he yells, flails, and flips out to whichever the movie is for that week

Let's not forget how many people love the films that are getting poked fun at as well.

I adore the Nostalgia Critic, but yes, as AnimatorX said, I adore some of the things he's reviewed. If anybody remembers that art thread I posted knows I'm an insane enough fan of Short Circuit to actually try to draw FANART of the ridiculously complex bot, but I found his review of the movies hilarious. (He did admit they're wonderful guilty pleasure films.)

Honestly? If you can't laugh at yourself, where's the fun in life? While yes, his reviews may seem harsh, but mostly it's just because of the rampant cursing and gags that are just that- gags to make people laugh.

Of course, I am also a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fan, and have been for most of my life, so I pretty much have a "I tease because I love" mentality.

And as for Don Bluth, he's had far worse critics than him. (And again, for the most part the NC LIKES Bluth.) If he did really care enough to be mad I doubt the NC is high on the list of people to fry. (Thankfully, though, he is not that way.)

In the end, I think before anyone gets mad they should just repeat a modified version of the MST3k mantra: "It's just a website, I should really just relax."

Anyway, did anyone see the rest of the reviews like A Troll in Central Park and The Pebble and the Penguin? Anyone? Man did they stink on ice but the reviews are worth it! :D
