Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a prerequisite for signing up?
The only thing that is required is that you have a passion for animation. When you sign up for the Workshop, you will receive a five-week gift membership to Don's Club which will allow you to post your artwork and upload your video content to our site.
When will the classes begin?
The first of the five week sessions will begin Sat. September 25th, 10:00 AM.
What is the cost of the five week session?
The cost is $250 per session (5 two hour classes). That's only $25.00 per hour!
Can you tell me about the curriculum?
All the students in the class will receive the same animation assignment; that is to say, we will all
animate the same scene. This keeps it simple, a must since we all live at different addresses in the world.
This session will deal with acting analysis, and learning how to use your Exposure sheet (X-sheet) and the
metronome to time your animation. If you should complete your scene before the session is over, you may ask for a second scene to work on.
Will you explain how it works? How is Don going to critique our work online?
In the first class, Don Bluth, as Director, will hand out the scene assignment
and explain to the student animators the action of the scene and the entertainment values he expects to see; this
method is exactly the way you would receive a scene handout from a working studio. The next step is to post the
thumbnails of your scene to receive an “Okay to animate,” from the Director. Once you get the okay, you may draw your extreme poses.
Don will want to check your extremes before you in-between them. Here is how that will work. At your desk, use
your 12 field guide to put cross hairs on your extremes. Mark them on the center line and at the 8 east and 8 west locations.
At Don’s office desk, we will print your extremes and peg the drawings according to your cross hairs. Now we have a copy of your work,
and we will then do an on line critique for all to see. We will withhold your name if you so specify. Students will also need to post a copy of their Exposure sheets illustrating the beats and the timing of the extremes.
What is the criteria for Don’s critique?
Based on what we have learned in the Master Class, here is the list by which your work will be judged:
A) Is your character on model?
B) Have you filled out your X-sheet correctly? Upload your X-Sheet for critique.
C) Is your animation timed to beats of the metronome?
D) Do you have an understanding of line direction?
E) Is your animation changing shapes?
F) Is your timing crisp or is it sluggish?
G) Do you anticipate your main action?
H) Are you entertaining?
What equipment will I need to participate?
