The Project

Many good things have their beginning in a private garage. The Cyber Garage Project is an extension of that idea. With this opportunity you can learn the animation principals with on-the-job experience. I believe that the best way to learn to swim is to jump into the water. If you really want to learn how to animate, you should get the proper equipment and make it happen for yourself. This competition will be to see who can animate the most entertaining scene. As the Director, I will judge your animation with the same standard as I would judge the professionals.

How it Works

This competition will last just over four months. It will begin on May 20th 2009 and will end on October 5th 2009.
Beginning May 20th 2009 till June 3rd 2009, all participants can choose to do a Walk, March or Run cycle of any of the characters, Momma Rabbit, The Fox, or Sasha.   Please see the model sheets in the links below.

Prerequisites

All participants must be a member of Don's club.
All participants of the Cyber Garage Project will be required to do a pencil test with one of the characters mentioned above.  This exercise will help the director determine the skill level of the animator.  There is no deadline for submitting the pencil test for approval.

Beginning June 3rd, 2009, and after the animator submits his/her pencil test, the director will assign the animator a scene from the Animatic (Leica Reel) based upon his/her skill level.

Turnaround Model Sheets & Walk Cycles.

The Turn-around-Model Sheets for each character is posted on the site.  An Example of the March and Walk cycles is also posted on the site.  See links below.

1) Turn-Around Model Sheets.

2) Walk-March-Run Cycles.

Cyber Garage Project Story Sketches

All of the story sketches for the CGP are on this site. Each scene in the story sketch will have drawing numbers, scene footage, scene descriptions, narration descriptions, dialog description and camera moves. The story sketches will be the roadmap for your scene. The story sketches can be found at this link.  Story sketches

The Animatic (Leica Reel)

We have cut together a rough animatic of the three minute short. This animatic will also serve as a road map for your animation. It will illustrate the tone of the short, include sound effects, music and dialog.
The animatic is located in the Don's Club Members area of the forum. You must be logged into your Don's Club account to see the animatic.
The Animatic is located at this link:  CGP Animatic

Pencil Tests

Work-in-Progress:  Animators can post their work-in-progress pencil tests in the public gallery for critique.
The Gallery for work-in-progress pencil tests is located here.  Pencil Test Gallery

Finished Tests: Animators can submit their finished pencil tests in the Don's Club Members area.
The Gallery for

Don's Club Members area

pencil tests is located here.  Finished Pencil Tests

NOTE: The final submitted test should be displayed in two formats:
A) The test should be shot at production speed.
B) Each drawing should be shot eight times for analysis.

When the animator is satisfied with his/her pencil test and he/she is ready to post his/her Final Submission, the animator can post his/her finished test in the Don's Club members section of the forum.
Here is the link for final submissions of the pencil tests.
Note: You must be logged into your Don's Club account to view these pages.

We will publish a script and all storyboards of the three minute animated short. You, the animator, will be assigned a scene to animate by the director. After you have received your scene, you can download the layout, at least two posed drawings, a model sheet and an exposure sheet. Later, we will upload an instructional video to show you how to proceed with the animation of your scene. As you progress, the Director will review your scene in the Don’s Club member’s area of the forum and supply you with notes on how to improve it.

When your scene is finished and OK’d by the director, it will be cut into the work reel (story Reel) of the three minute short. The animator is responsible for shipping his OK’d scene to the Director in DVD format for cut-in. More instructions on this later.

In this competition, you will take on the role of my apprentice and I will be your mentor. In this relationship, it is paramount that you follow instructions. For the moment, try to resist being a free spirit and doing your own thing! As Director and artists, we serve the production as a team. To enter the competition, you must be a current, active member of Don's Club. Once you have become a member of Don's Club, you will have access to all the premium videos in our archives.
